BUZZIN’

5 days to go until ‘The Beginning’.

So here we are – fight night a matter of days away and somehow the gym feels different.  It’s enveloped in a different sort of energy…nervous, excited energy that’s about to pop and hopefully that will happen right on cue this Sunday.

Paul had little to say to me last night (Monday 12th), for the time being his work here is done.  He’d messed with the guys’ heads a bit.  He’d asked them to come for a heavy sparring session – so loaded up, one by one they filtered through the door only to be told they didn’t need any of their protective gear – getting to grips with these highs and lows of the unexpected is what the next few days is about.

Tonight was full on cardio, the last night of real cardio before Sunday, so the session was about keeping their motors running for 90 minutes.  Out came the pads…and along came the noise.  Pad holders shouting out the moves, gloves meeting the pads and hips sprawling on the mats mid combination – it was manic.

The guys have done enough sparring and it’s too close to the fight now for any of the fighters getting injured but there was still plenty of energy in the room.  The guys used this session to practice their combinations, their speed and their reactions.  Dom our very own Energizer Bunny was so quick on the pads I had to make a point not to blink and Chris so assertive in his shouting out the combos I would have been afraid not to do as he asked – I hope he takes this intensity into the cage with him at the weekend.

Sunday’s not just about MMA we have guys fighting muay thai and boxing too.  Ben Wood is getting ready for his fight, no sign of nerves he’s just keen to lose the final kilo and he’s confident he will.  Matt one of our boxers claimed to be full of nervous energy, visualising his fight a constant loop in his mind he’s eager for fight night to come around…he can’t wait.

When Paul told the guys to head home – the cage was still full – so keen is everyone to make the most of the time in the cage but Paul was having none of it and in the nicest possible way – kicked their Asses out.
